        Well, being the first stage of the Civil services examination, Prelims is always special. It is casually told that, "UPSC Prelims is an exam designed to filter out the candidates" 💣. Having faced the filtration once in 2019 and having managed to reach UPSC interview stage in 2020, I have some insights to share with you regarding the Prelims examination.             There is no single foolproof path to clear UPSC examination. Each UPSC aspirant have their own strengths and weaknesses, only after careful analysis of the same, we could arrive at any conclusions. The number of questions you attempt is a major deciding factor in Prelims. On average, 900,000 to 1,000,000 candidates apply every year and the number of candidates sitting in the preliminary examination is approximately 550,000", says Wikipedia 😱😱. Out of them barely 10,000+ clear Prelims and only 2000+ are fortunate to get Interview call. The vacancies in UPSC CSE examinations do differ decelerate year on year - 712 for 2021; 796 for 2020 and 896 in 2019 !!

Average Cut-off marks in UPSC Prelims examination:

Please observe the handmade graph with respect to the previous year cut-offs of UPSC Prelims examination.

On calculating the average, I have rounded off the OPTIMAL MARKS / MIMIMUM MARKS to clear UPSC Prelims as 105. Eventhough the Cutoff hasn't crossed 100 in last 2 years, it is much intelligible to have a higher cutoff, so that we finally sail the through Prelims exam.

Based on a manually-built tabulation, I have come to the conclusion that one must attempt more than 85 questions to clear the UPSC Prelims with a safe edge and this holds particularly for the candidates who get more negative marks (due to wrong answers).
